God Created No Spare Parts

Have you ever put together flat pack furniture? You followed the instructions to the letter and the job is done, but there are a few annoying parts left over. You ask yourself: What are these spare parts for? Did I miss something?

When God made you to be part of His family, the body of Christ, you were never created as a spare part. God made no spare parts for the Church. In fact you are purpose built and you have a part to play that makes a difference (1 Corinthians 12:12-31). Like a sophisticatedly engineered and crafted aeroplane engine every piece is there for a reason and serves a purpose. The aeroplane can’t take off without every piece present and functioning correctly.

In Numbers 3 an entire tribe, the Levites, was assigned to assist Aaron (high priest) and his two sons (priests). A total workforce of 8,580 would assist these three men. That’s insane; most pastors don’t even have a dedicated assistant! Every Levite had a job to do, no matter how prestigious or obscure the role, as God summarised in this chapter and would spell out in the next.

Step Up, Play Your Part

If the Levites didn’t do their assigned job the dismantled Tabernacle couldn’t be moved correctly from one location to the next as the Israelites made their way to the Promised Land. They would be failing the LORD and the Israelites, their own countrymen. How much more with you and I as the Church? As Paul said: “If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honoured, every part rejoices with it” (1 Corinthians 12:26). Step up and play your part.

Does knowing that you are a purpose built part of the body of Christ change how you see your local church? Why or why not?
